The Effect of Video Games
Hello everyone. Recently I had to do a research paper for one of my teacher education classes. I choose to do mine about video games and how they affect us.
Here is a quick Abstract of the paper that I wrote up in about 5 minutes.
Quote:

The basic idea is that researchers are saying that video games have a negative impact on the academic achievement of individuals. They also believe that it leads to violent behavior if the games the child plays are violent. Studies have been done to look at the aggressive behavior of children who play violent video games. Other studies have been done to look at the correlation between academic achievement and amount of time spent playing video games. Today video games are starting to become more academic. Game developers are starting to see this as a great way to teach children different things while having fun. The amount of research done has not completely supported the hypothesis of many researchers.

(FYI for those who do not normally read research papers, abstract is a general overview of the paper, this one is a bad abstract but it was just simply to give our teacher an overview in the format he wanted)
Anyways I have attached the actual research paper. I am warning you it is fairly long, 9 full pages and a 1/4th. Any feedback on what you think would be great. Hope you enjoy it.

Ummm one research done by a Danish university (forgot name, I'll have to find that link again), suggests that the desensitizing effect does not exist.

I've been playing video games since I was 4 or 5. First games I ever played was Mortal Combat 2 and Doom for the Super Nintendo that were my brothers. It's never had a negative impact on my life, if anything it's helped. My hand eye coordination is great, I learned most of my reading skills and math from some of the basic RPGs for the Super Nintendo and Gameboy. I am sometimes lazy and I am a horrible procrastinator but it's not because of video games. My grades were usually average, I didn't often apply myself because I found my work too easy so I would guess and coast through classes.
Video games are only bad if the parents are stupid.

The nerds, geeks, gamers, are not the ones being violent. The jocks, thugs, gangsters, dropouts are. I think we need to examine the effect of sports and rap music on our youth.

Exactly, nerds and geeks kill themselves, jocks and thugs kill others before killing themselves.
Get the facts straight people.

We don't kill ourselves either. We're too busy having fun gaming for that

Like I said it's a research paper, opinions are from them. Personally I don't think that violent video games make people violent. I think people are already violent some of us can just suppress our rage better then others.
That Journal article did not pop up some guy. If it had then it might have been included. Those are just from sources that I found from WebFeat.

I really don't know, you'd probably have to be messed up in the head to do something like kill somebody after watching/playing a video game. My first video game was probably Zelda when I was like 3-4, I kept asking what the game said and I just started to read on my own. In 2nd grade I read a book called Red Wall. Anyway, It's about 300 pages or so and really small print. I'm a really good reader and I excel in most subjects except writing( I'm just ok at it).
So it hasn't had a negative effect on me. I'd say I have better hand-eye-coordination. I've learned many things from video games and I wouldn't regret playing them one bit. I just like things like fantasy and I play the games for fun. Yeah, I do have glasses and it probably was mostly from staring at the television but grandma has glacoma or...idk how to spell it but yeah. Anyway, it's probably in my family's genes. I believe other people in my family have had it. I do play sports(Basketball) and I'm not half bad either. I'm just a mix of a "normal" kid and a "nerdy" kid, lol. That just about sums it up. Sorry for the wall of text!

It's just people saying that everything that is different is bad. That is the Christian Republican way.
Everyone else is wrong, everyone else is immoral and evil. Christians don't like rap? It must cause people to kill people! They don't like violent video games? They must cause people to kill other people!!!!
What about...oh I don't know, religion? Religion itself is the cause of a lot of wars. People KILL people in a war, so religion causes people to kill other people. You can't say that though, thats a sin and the Christian people will get mad at you. It can't be them, they are perfect, it must be everyone else causing all the violence.

Religion is only an excuse. Material reasons caused holy wars, not religion

I play video games. I just got accepted into Princeton. Though I only read your abstract, so not really sure exactly what the message of the thing was.

Psycho-sociological results are rarely general rules like "A implies B", so you can't rule them out with a counter-example like in logic. It's more "we've seen statistical data linking A to B" and an attempt to show significant phenomenon to look with attention. Your example may fall outside of the "statistical proof" for reasons outside of this study (such as parents watching over you when you play, very strong personality and mind, etc.) As I've mentioned in my previous post, the influence of gaming and the addictive side of it are more and more researched and questioned. I think Anet did a great job by removing monthly-fees which may push MMO players towards more addiction (but yet, grinding may imply addiction?)
(on the other hand, some very powerful examples can sometimes shift the balance of understanding of a lot of people; I remember reading about how people got very afraid of RPGs when they heard that a D&D player committed suicide by jumping from the top of a tall building)
